Frosty Mornings

I haven't been as active as I have wanted to be on this website, so I'm posting this now, and the plan is to keep doing it at least on a weekly basis, sometimes more, hopefully never less.

It will be various things I've photographed with some text to it. This time, it's frosty mornings (and a little night).

For almost two weeks now, I've been in Setermoen, and it's been cold, so lots of frosty mornings. Not much aurora and clear skies, mostly a greenish background. But tonight that might change it seems, both a clear sky and KP5+ it seems, so in the next couple of days, there might be a new post with those pictures.

Later on I will be writing about where I am and why, but for now, it's only pictures, but there will also be some video.

Spring has Arrived

During winter time, the beach at Lathari is full of thick ice which moves somewhat up and down with the tide, but you don't see the sea much except for maybe between the cracks in the ice.
Now spring has arrived, and there are only occasional bits of ice left the low tide arrives. Here are some pictures from today when Luna and I visited Lathari to explore. I even got her to sit still for a bit, so I could get some portraits of her. She loves to run and swim in all kinds of waters, muddy puddles and the ocean, and I love how she looks when she has been playing, it shows that she's had a good time.

Frost Smoke and Colors in the Sky

Today we had down towards -27°C/-16.6°F which made for a lot of sea/frost smoke (not really sure what it's usually called in English, so going with Wikipedia here). And in the afternoon the sky had some amazing colors. Still just over two weeks until we can see the Sun, but the days are certainly brighter each day. I also recorded video from various locations in Alta, and might be posting that later on.

Holiday Snowfall

We've had some heavy snowfall and a bit of wind the last few days, and I've been out trying to capture this beautiful weather with both stills and video. It might be cold, but it's beautiful to look at. Here are some of the pictures, and the video will come later, I might still try to capture more of it in the coming days.

Some Slow Motion Samples from Finnmarksløpet 2015

I recorded a bit of video during the start of Finnmarksløpet 2015, both at the main start at Alta city center, and at the restart for the 1000km participants (they have famous people etc. in their sled from the city center to the restart at Sorrisniva). Here are some clips from the video I recorded.

A trip to Lathari with Luna

Luna and I visit Lathari a lot. It's a local beach area where when the tide is low you can walk for miles of land that is under water when the tide is high. Always fresh smells and things to drag around for Luna, and for me to throw for her. Also she loves the water and doesn't care if it's winter or summer, she runs into it regardless. It's better in the summer, for me, cause then I can hose her off outside, during winter she must go in the shower for that.

A Slow Motion Dog's Day at the Beach

A trip to the snowy Lathari beach in Alta with some friends and all our dogs. Mine is  Luna, the very energetic white one with black areas around the eye sand a ring on the back.

I just got the Samsung 45mm f/1.8, a small, cheap plastic lens, cause I realizes it would be nice to have something with auto focus for when Finnmarksløpet starts at the end of this week. My impression of it so far after having using for a couple of day is extremely positive. i don't understand how they managed to make something so cheap be so good. It renders sharp images at f/1.8, and that's with 28 megapixels on an APS-C sized sensor. I'm very impressed. A full review is coming later.

This is the lens I used for the video, it was my first time using anything with auto focus on the NX1, so I wasn't completely aware of how it worked, but the result was still pretty good in my opinion, these are active dogs, and Luna is a white dog, and it was snow, so quite impressed.

This Sunday I also recorded some video of snowmobile drag racing, and I'm working on that now, so that's coming up before Finnmarksløpet starts on Friday, so look out for that.

A week with the Samsung NX1, some initial thoughts

So I ended up selling my lovely Fujifilm X-T1 all of the sudden. The reason is the Samsung NX1. The reason is that the NX1 would be at least as good for stills (peaking for manual focus, 28 megapixels, 15 FPS, very good ISO performance, great electronic view finder(EVF) etc..), and if Samsung fixes the very cumbersome focus peaking (it has to be turned on after every touch of the shutter button), then it will be.

But, the video specs and performance of the NX1 is far beyond the X-T1, even after the X-T1 got manual video in the December 2014 firmware update. It does 4K and UHD, and 1080p up to 120 FPS, all with peaking while recording (on the X-T1, peaking turned off when recording started), and you can connect an external monitor and recorder, no such thing on the X-T1.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the X-T1, it was magnificent to use, and the pictures it captured were amazing. But I want to do video as well, and with the X-T1, it just wasn't going to happen as I wanted it.
